The ERC-4337 standard explained

The ERC-4337 standard introduces the "UserOperation" object for smart wallets on Ethereum. Initiating a UserOperation sends a "higher-layer pseudo-transaction object" to a dedicated mempool for ERC-4337 transactions. ERC-4337 offers increased flexibility, allowing users to bundle multiple transactions within a UserOperation and delegate transaction fee payment to an Externally Owned Account (EOA).

Utilizing ERC-4337 involves four stages:

  • Users create a UserOperation to express their transaction intent, akin to unconfirmed transactions.

  • UserOperations are bundled in a specific mempool for ERC-4337, managed by Bundlers (validators).

  • Bundled transactions are sent to the EntryPoint contract, a standardized code reference on the blockchain.

  • The EntryPoint invokes the validateUserOp function to identify the UserOperation linked to the contract wallet, requiring the smart contract wallet to implement the ExecuteUserOp function for transaction completion.
